Doing-bits

My fellow OU playwright, Tyler Whidden, and I are teaming with OU MFA filmmaker, Vinay Choudary to film a short improvised movie this December based off an idea that Vinay has.

This is a little thing I improvised for him for his 2nd year film, “Easy Mel.” Tyler also improvised this amazing monologue (way better than mine). Neither made the cut, because they didn’t have much to do with the throughline,  but Vinay became interested in shooting an improvised movie this third year. So we start in December, and hopefully keep shooting during free time in the spring.

DADDY’S LITTLE GIRLS Named KCACTF National Semi-Finalist

My 10-minute play, DADDY’S LITTLE GIRLS, was one of six 10-minute plays accepted to Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival Region 2, which just took place in Cleveland. In the closing ceremonies, it was named one of the two National Semi-Finalists from our region.

There will be a total of 16 KCACTF National Semi-Finalists. Four of those will be invited to Washington, D.C. for the national KCACTF in April.

Below is a pic of me (on the left), my director David A. Miller (right), and my cast.

KCACTF Daddy's Little Girls Cast

DADDY’S LITTLE GIRLS was created for one of our “Madness” shows at Ohio University. That show was produced by Tyler Whidden, and were given the prompt “Coffin Block.” Coffin Block’s are long rectangular blocks that we use in our black box theater to use as benches, car seats, etc. I had my sisters jump on the “bed,” comprised of the coffin blocks, to start the play. Read the play by clicking on the title: DADDY’S LITTLE GIRLS.

“10-4” & “Moraine.” Announcing My Two Summer Projects in Chicago

truckstop2

I finally feel comfortable enough to talk about a production and a reading I’m doing this summer in Chicago.

First, in conjunction with CIC, I’m producing a night of four short plays called “10-4.”
4 Plays
4 Playwrights
4 Directors
1 Truck Stop

The four plays are written by myself, and three other Ohio University playwrights, Anthony Ellison, Neal Adelman, and Tyler Whidden. All four plays will take place at the same truck stop. Directors and cast are TBA.

CIC Theater is located at 1422 W. Irving Park Rd, Chicago, IL, 60613.

Dates (Subject to Change) are:
Friday 8/8,
Thursdays – Saturdays 8/14 – 8/31.

Secondly, on Tuesday, July 22nd, I’m doing a reading of my play “Moraine” as part of the Trellis Reading Series at the Greenhouse Theater. It’s being directed by Mary Rose O’Connor, and the cast is TBA.

“Moraine” is the full-length play I’ve been developing through my first-year in the MFA Playwriting program at Ohio University. It’s about a group of friends in Chicago, who’ve become family over the course of their 20s and 30s. The “family” risks breaking apart with the approaching death of a friend stricken with cancer.

“10-4” is probably semi-consciously inspired by playwright, and fellow Kansan, William Inge’s “Bus Stop,” and being, you know, a Midwesterner that’s visited his share of truck stops over the years.

I am very excited to be working and collaborating in Chicago this summer. The Chicago theater and improv communities are so talented, and amazing to work with. I will post more info as we get closer to the productions.
